“Solo Semble” is a Berlin-based classical encounter project founded in 2022.
It unites two emerging Ukrainian opera singers and a string ensemble consisting of international professional classical-taught musicians.
“Solo Semble” – is also the first and only ensemble of its cast in Germany, in which Ukrainian and foreign vocalists and instrumentalists promote the uniqueness of Ukrainian
opera and, in particular, western Ukrainian music culture from the 18th century to present. Apart from that, they interpret worldwide known opera classics as well
as international vocal works barely known on bigger stages, and show extraordinary cosmopolitanism and artistic flexibility. Since many of the ensemble’s musicians are refugees
from warfare countries they also initiate welfare events intended to provide humanitarian help to people still living in affected areas.
Thanks to the Ukrainian heritage of its soloists, the repertoire of “Solo Semble” features a rich collection of instrumental works, operatic arias, and individual orchestral art songs by Ukrainian composers spanning from the classical period to the present day. This includes the works of Maksym Berezovsky (1745–1777), Dmytro Bortniansky (1751–1821), Denys Bonkovsky (1816–1881), Mykola Lysenko (1842–1912), Anatoliy Kos-Anatolsky (1909–1983), Mykhailo Zherbin (1911–2004), Dezideriy Zador (1912–1985), Oleksandr Doskalov (1912–1989), Myroslav Skoryk (1938–2020), and many others. These vocal pieces, almost devoid of overt dramatism, are imbued with a bittersweet sense of nostalgia, love, and faith, portraying the lives of ordinary people. They beautifully reflect the (musical) identity and history of Ukrainians as an independent nation.
Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.”* – Victor Hugo
Having performed in the most renowned philharmonic halls, theaters, and opera houses across Ukraine and Europe, the members of “Solo Semble” present a strikingly multifaceted international opera program. Their awe-inspiring performances include operatic arias by Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Bizet, Offenbach, Puccini, Mascagni, Lehár, Dvořák, and Verdi. Our soloists, Bardash, have proven to be exceptionally versatile artists who captivate audiences and guide them on an unforgettable journey from Ukraine to the world stage.
